Stimulated For Life

People often ask what draws me to create sensual portraits. Of all the things I could create, why make nude and erotic art my primary focus? The answer is simple, really.

Because the human form, that's why. This thing that we each live in has always had a way of fascinating and inspiring me. Because every tool or machine we create is an attempt at replicating or augmenting the feat of engineering that is this, the human body.

And so, I'm eternally drawn to notions of humanness. Of aliveness. Of connectedness. Of that nature which exists beyond the body and yet can only be expressed through the body. Through the agency afforded by a body and mind operating in sync.

You see, I believe that there's life in all things. A cosmic awareness to the universe. An awareness that both predates the human form and will outlive it. But today, we are here. We are the universe experiencing itself. Navigating itself. Discovering itself. Imbued with a unique creative capacity to self-articulate. To trace out borders between the self and all else surrounding. To stick a flag within those borders and say "This is me."

The body provides us with a home to protect. The ability to feel. It contextualizes our existence, marking us at a place in time. It grounds us in a sense of continuity. Of realness.

And so, my work is less about displaying the body than it is about discovering the form. Carving figures in stone to highlight just how incredible it is that stone exists. What forms it can take.

When I look at the human body in all its possible forms, I see marble. And my work is in providing platforms upon which it may be appreciated.

From an early age, we are instilled with shame surrounding our bodies. A fear of being seen. And this fear and shame extend to all parts of our psyche, making our decisions for us. Controlling our thoughts, feelings and the ways in which we navigate life. Standardizing the shapes our marble takes and limiting the expressions of our limitless selves.

When we strip back these manufactured layers, all that's left is us. Each uniquely sculpted.

Don't believe me? It's right there in The Bible.
