SURFACE TENSION

A surreal series conveying a disconnect between the self and the distorted representation of self in pop media

SURFACE TENSION

This project was inspired by what I see as a lack of healthy depictions of Black sexuality in media. I've found that it's difficult for many Black people to connect with the stories/performers in erotic content so this work seeks to reflect that search for intimacy in spaces where one does not see themselves honored.
'Surface tension' is a scientific property of water causing droplets to form and allowing objects to float on water's surface. I borrowed its name for the title of this project, using droplets to represent distortion and the mirror to represent both the surface of a liquid body and the largely homogeneous pool of mainstream erotica/sexuality.
